Welcome to my website gallery and blog. I’m Ivy Burley, signing my work as “Tateh”. I’m a British-born (1952) artist living and working in the Essex countryside in England.

With a few exceptions, I mainly paint expressive and conceptual abstracts on canvas. I work in a wide range of media, including inks, oils and acrylics to achieve the texture, colour tones and temperatures I need. I find that this free use of tone, temperature grade and texture, ensures that my work will continue to ask questions of the observer’s eye.

You will see that I avoid describing the inspiration and motivation behind each work of art I present to you. Titles are also meaningful, yet open and generic. This is because I want the observer to come close to my work without any preconceptions. This way I find that through the observer’s own experience of life and their own subconscious thoughts, a deeper, more intimate bond with the piece is achieved.

People paint for many reasons. I paint to be free. When I am absorbed in creating a work, blending and manipulating tones and textures, I am free. I want the observer to enjoy this sense of freedom reflected in my work. Nothing in life gives me greater pleasure than to know that my work is already being appreciated across the UK and US, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Russia and the Middle East.
